Life is messy. It is full of circumstances and situations that we would rather avoid. However, we have a choice to make when we find ourselves in these situations. Do we accept it and make the most of it, or do we complain about it and have a bad attitude? Here is what the Apostle Paul instructed the church at Philippi:
Imagine if this was a characteristic of your life. What if people looked at you and said: "There is someone who never grumbles, complains, or argues." Wouldn't that be a wonderful testimony of Christ in your life (see Philippians 2:15)?
When we analyze this verse, we learn some very important information. Grumbling and disputing is manifested both outwardly and inwardly.
The Greek word for grumbling is γογγυσμός. It has a meaning of murmuring or secret debate. It points to dissatisfaction or discontentment of the present situation. Thoughts are not shared openly, only in private; and the thoughts shared are not good.
The Greek word for disputing is διαλογισμός. The focus of this verb is inward. It relates to the inner thoughts of a person, an inward deliberation. In other words, this is an argument with yourself. Again, it highlights dissatisfaction and discontentment with the present situation. This disputing may never be shared with someone else, but can cause bitterness and anger.
If someone is grumbling or disputing, they have a heart problem. If someone is not satisfied with something in his life, then he is not satisfied with God (at least at the present moment.) It points to a me-first attitude instead of a Christ-first attitude.
Brothers and sisters, are we (am I) willing to call this for what it is: sin? Are we (am I) willing to repent of this and be truly thankful to God for whatever situation we are in, knowing that He is in control and His purposes outweigh out own? Practically speaking, are we (am I) willing to go to a brother and talk openly about issues instead of talking behind his back?
Imagine the possibilities if your own life could be characterized as one without a grumbling or disputing spirit.
Do all things without grumbling or disputing!
